Program Instructors
Courtney Quebec
Music Instructor
Courtney Quebec has had a love affair with music since before she learned how to speak. Born into a musical household– her father a professional jazz bassist and her mother a recreational classical pianist – Courtney was constantly surrounded by the sounds of Mozart and Charles Mingus. It’s only natural that she ended up at York University obtaining a Bachelor’s degree specializing in music performance, as well as a Master of Arts in jazz composition. After having played the piano throughout her childhood, flute and saxophone at elementary school and attending a performing arts high school majoring in vocal music Courtney followed her passion and natural talent all the way from the small town of Sudbury, Ontario to the heart of downtown Toronto.
At York University Courtney received several distinctions such as an entrance scholarship, the Sterling-Beckwith award and the prestigious Douglas Phillip Menzie jazz scholarship. She also had the honour of being featured on JazzFM 91.1’s “Jazzology” program. Although she entered the university as a jazz vocalist, she decided to also enroll in jazz piano lessons to compliment her singing, and soon thereafter she was splitting her focus equally between the two instruments. Studying with greats like Bonnie Brett, Richard Whiteman, Adrean Farrugia, Mark Eisenman, Mike Murley, Kelly Jefferson and Kevin Turcotte, Courtney has learned how to play and compose within the jazz tradition.
Singing and playing in several jazz groups, Courtney is currently gigging around the GTA, playing at restaurants, art galleries, weddings, corporate functions and private parties. Recent appearances include Gate 403, Liberty Bistro and the Jazz Sudbury Festival. Special projects include collaboration with artist Annie Tung, who does live abstract painting performances accompanied by improvised music. Courtney has done recent studio work with her own quartet, as well as working professionally as a back-up vocalist for sessions.
Courtney’s debut CD, “I Hear Colours”, is a collection of compositions she completed for her Master’s thesis, as well as some jazz standards. In November 2011 Chalker’s pub will be hosting a CD Release concert. Courtney has been teaching private piano and voice lessons for nearly ten years now to students of all ages and experience levels. A versatile teacher, she is able to draw from her knowledge of classical and jazz music to cater to a wide variety of students’ needs. Courtney is also a certified Rainbow Songs instructor, where she teaches specialized group music classes designed for babies and young children aged 5 and under.
